In general, skeletal pruning allows faster recovery of productivity and increased economic profitability of the crop. However, particular conditions of the crop system may require different forms of application of this pruning. This study aimed to evaluate the response of arabica coffee on low population density to different skeletal pruning types in the edaphoclimatic conditions of Caparaó Capixaba Region. The experiment was carried out in Iúna/ES, (750 m asl), Catuaí Vermelho IAC ? 44 variety with 15 year-old, spacing 3.0 x 1.2 m (2,777 plants/ha), in LVA soil. The experimental design was randomized blocks with six treatments, three repetitions of three rows with seven plants/row. Treatments tested were T1- Standard skeletal prunning, T2 ? Skeletal pruning over the top side of the line, T3-Pruning with skirt cleaning, T4- Skeletal pruning with 2/3 of the lower branches, T5- Skeletal pruning every two years (zero yield), and T6- No pruning. The trial started in August/2016 when all plots received five different types of pruning, and conducted during four years. All type of prunings showed similar results for this kind of low population density coffee; a trend of superiority in a long term was noted for conventional skeletal pruning. The similarity between the treatments allows the coffee grower to adopt the one of lower cost for its execution and that may favor more cultural dealings. No pruning caused death of plants; the treatment without pruning intervention (control), and the biennial skeletal pruning allowed greater vegetative vigor in the evaluated cultivar. Four clones of robusta coffee representing drought-tolerant (14 and 120) and drought-sensitive (46 and 109A) genotypes were submitted to a slowly imposed water deficit. Sampling and measurements were performed when predawn leaf water potential (Ψpd) approximately −2.0 and −3.0 MPa was reached. Regardless of the clone evaluated, drought led to sharper decreases in stomatal conductance than in photosynthesis, which was accompanied by significant declines in internal to ambient CO2 concentration ratio. Little or no effect of drought on chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters was observed. Regardless of the stress intensity, starch decreased remarkably. This was not accompanied by significant changes in concentration of soluble sugars, with the exception of clone 120 in which a rise in sucrose and hexose concentrations was found when Ψpd reached −3.0 MPa. At Ψpd = −2.0 MPa, activity of acid invertase increased only in clone 120; at Ψpd = −3.0 MPa, it increased in clones 14, 46 and 120, while activity of sucrose synthase declined, but only in clone 109A. Drought-induced decrease in ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase activity was found only in clones 14 and 46, irrespective of stress intensity. At Ψpd = −3.0 MPa, maximal extractable and activation state of sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS) decreased in all clones with the exception of clone 120, in which SPS activity was maintained in parallel to a rising activity of fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase. Changes in SPS activity could neither be explained by the CO2 decrease linked to stomatal closure nor by differences in leaf water status.
