A crude preparation of the exopolysaccaride (EPS) of Xanthomonas campestris pv. manihotis (Berthet & Bondar, 1915) Dye 1978 was obtained by growing the pathogen on solid culture medium for 30 h at 280C. The bacterial growth was harvested in PBS and the suspension contrefuged at 10.000 g/20 mino Ethanol was added to the supernatant to a concentraction of 70% giving rise to a white precipitate that was dialysed against destilled water. The dialysate was considered the crude preparation of the EPS. Cassava shoots ('Chagas' and 'Branquinha' cultuvars) were used to test biological acitivity of the cru de EPS. The basal part of shoots was immersed in different dilutions of the cru de EPS in destilled water. The time for wilting was inversely proportional to EPS concentration. Turgescence recorver was observed when 0,5 em of the basal part of the shoots was remved ant the shoots transfered to destilled water.pt_BR
