A Empresa Capixaba de Pesquisa Agropecuária, EMCAPA, hoje EMCAPER (Empresa Capixaba de Pesquisa, Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural), na área de melhoramento genético, vem trabalhando com a espécie Coffea arabica a partir de 1993, tendo como objetivos iniciais: selecionar e recomendar cultivares de Coffea arabica com características de elevada produção e qualidade, homogeneidade de maturação, precocidade, resistência á ferrugem e outras doenças de importância, melhor arquitetura de planta, entre outras. No ano de 1993, através de introduções realizadas no IBC/FEX Caratinga e na EPAMIG/UFV, foram instalados três experimentos, com os seguintes materiais genéticos: Exp. 1- 32 progênies F3 de híbridos de ?Catuaí Vermelho? x ?Híbrido e Timor? e ?Catuaí Amarelo? x ?Catimor?; Exp. 2 ? 26 progênies de ?Catimor?; Exp. 3 ? 26 progênies de híbridos de ?Mundo Novo? x ?Hibrido de Timor?. Sobressaíram, com médias acima de 20 sc.benef./ha, ?H 315-8-2?, ?H 337-10-1? e ?H 419-8-7,? no Exp. 1; ?H 486-2-3?, ?H 464-5-6? e ?H 469-6-5?, no Exp. 2; e ?UFV 5410?, no Exp. 3. Verificou baixa incidência de ferrugem (Hemileia vastatrix) e de mancha de olho pardo (Cercospora coffeicola), na maioria dos tratamentos e maturação dos frutos média a tardia e desuniforme.

In 1993, through
introductions carried out in IBC/FEX Caratinga and in EPAMIG/UFV, three experiments were installed, with the following genetic materials: Exp.1- 32 progenies F3 of hybrids of ?Catuaí Vermelho? x ?Híbrido e Timor? e ?Catuaí Amarelo? x ?Catimor?; Exp.2 ? 26 progenies of ?Catimor?; and Exp.3 ? 26 progênies of hybrids of ?Mundo Novo? x ?Hibrido de Timor?. Standing out, with averages higher than 20 sc.benef./ha, ?H 315-8-2?, ?H 337-10-1? e ?H 419-8-7,? in Exp. 1; ?H 486-2-3?, ?H 464-5-6? and ?H 469-6-5?, in Exp. 2; and
?UFV 5410?, in Exp. 3. There was low incidence of rust (Hemileia vastatrix) and brown eye spot (cercospora coffeicola) in most of the treatments and maturation of the fruits between medium and late nonuniform. Coffee crop represents a great economic importance in Brazil, in which Arabica coffee represents a great part of the national production. However, the average yield of Arabica coffee is low, which reduces the profitability of the activity. Pruning systems can regain vigor and increase productivity. The system most adopted by coffee farmers is ?recepa? (cutting off the orthotropic branch at 0.8 m above ground), which has not resulted in efficient reinvigoration. It is believed that the implementation of new systems, such as programmed pruning cycle, can improve the productivity of Arabica coffee. However, the economic impacts and risks associated with this type of pruning are still unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility and financial risk of the use of programmed pruning cycle compared to traditional Arabica pruning. A financial viability of programmed pruning cycle without Arabica coffee was determined by calculating the Net Present Value and the Internal Rate of Return. Using the sensitivity analysis, to identify the items with the greatest impact on the project. Finally, the financial risk of this technique was determined by the Monte Carlo method. The technical coefficient used for the elaboration of cash flows and is available
