The generation of by-products from industrial processes is a reality and has been a major challenge concerning the treatment and proper final destination of these materials. Coffee grounds are the chief waste generated in the instant coffee
agro-industry, and composing is one of the alternatives for their management and final destination, with the subsequent use of the compost as an organic fertilizer. Composting is a technique that converts agro-industrial waste into a product with nutritional value for plants, stable and free of contaminants. A composting plant operates at the Viana Experimental Farm (FEV), which belongs to the Capixaba Institute of Research, Technical Assistance, and Rural Extension (Incaper) in Viana-ES. The plant aims to solve the problem of disposing of the waste generated in the manufacture of soluble coffee by a coffeeagro-industry. This study aimed to assess the potential of the organic compost produced from coffee grounds waste used as fertilizer for growing maize. We compared the use of different doses of compost in addition to mineral fertilization. Agronomic parameters were assessed, such as plant productivity, and an economic evaluation of each treatment was carried out. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, with four replications and five treatments, with maize of the INCAPER ES 203 cultivar grown in an irrigated system. The treatments were: 1) 100% organic compost; 2) 75% organic compost + 25% mineral fertilizer; 3) 50% organic compost + 50% mineral fertilizer; 4) 25% organic compost + 75% mineral fertilizer; and 5) 100% mineral fertilizer. The treatments were statistically compared using the Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. As a result, the treatments that received the organic compost presented inferior performance in the development and in the corn productivity to the treatment that received only mineral fertilization. In the evaluation of grain yield, treatments 4 and 5 showed the highest yields, differing statistically from the others. The treatments did not differ statistically in the economic evaluation. Thus, they demonstrated the viability of applying organic compost. This study concluded that organic compost containing coffee grounds showed satisfactory results for fertilizing maize crops, especially when it is used in addition to mineral fertilizer. The use of pure organic compost or in association with mineral fertilization, even though it showed lower yields, proved to be economically viable compared to the treatment with mineral fertilization, due to its lower fertilization cost. In what is a first for the world, leaf spot disease of sweet potato, caused by Boeremia exigua, is reported in Brazil. Identity of the fungus was confirmed by a combination of molecular and morphological data. Koch?s postulates were fulfilled with a selected isolate of the fungus obtained from Santa Maria do Jetibá, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Ipomoea batatas (Convolvulaceae) - sweet potato - is the sixth most important food crop worldwide (CIP 2020). Several diseases are limiting factors for this crop, including field and storage diseases (Clark et al. 2013). In Brazil, sweet potato has lost some of its former importance because of changes in the consumer?s habits but still remains one of the top vegetables in Brazilian agriculture (Silva et al. 2008). These authors listed several fungal diseases that occur on sweet potato in Brazil, but considered that damage to the crop by fungal diseases is normally small. In June 2015, sweet potato plants bearing severe leaf spot damage were observed in a plantation in the municipality of Santa Maria de Jetibá (state of Espirito Santo, Brazil). Lesions were initially circular but became irregular, slightly sunken and zonate, dark brown, surrounded by a chlorotic halo, coalescing and leading to a blight of part or entire leaves (Fig. 1a). Older lesions often became torn in their central parts. Numerous, black dots were repeatedly seen immersed in the necrosed tissues when viewed using magnifying lens.
